(The Five Finger Essay is part of THE FIVE FINGER PARAGRAPH© family of products) Do you know... How to write a Five Paragraph Essay for the the SAT or ACT Exam? I DIDN'T!!
I couldn't write an essay that would pass the guy at the front desk until I was 24 years old! But once I "cracked the code," I never made less than an "A" on an essay or term paper -- ever again!!
To explain that, let's ask the questions that a normal investigative reporter would ask -- Who, What, When, Where, and Why.
WHO WROTE THIS? I DID! My name is Johnnie W. Lewis and as the author/illustrator of The Five Finger Paragraph© method of writing paragraphs and essays, I've also written The Five Finger Essay©, aimed specifically at teenagers who need to be able to write an essay when they take the SAT or ACT exam. This "Kit" in ebook form is 80+ pages FULL of instructions, tips, practice worksheets/charts, self-grading checklists, Quick Guide Cards™, bookmarkers and more. You won't find FREE SAMPLE ESSAYS on this site. Having a copy of a good essay in front of you only shows you that someone else can write a good essay. It doesn't show YOU how to write a good essay for yourself. But The Five Finger Essay© will! The SAT (College Board) now requires students to write an essay during a 25-minute segment of the test. The ACT makes it an option. Knowing how to write a qualifying Five Finger Essay© will:

When I was 24-years-old, married with a baby girl, I started back to college. I'd almost failed English when I originally began college, because I couldn't write an essay! And I was failing again during my first quarter back in school. It wasn't until my English term paper was returned that the light bulb finally "came on" inside my head at 1000-watts. The teacher used me as an example, in front of the whole class, by saying "Johnnie, you can't have a 10 page paragraph!" In the middle of our in-class essay that day, I suddenly "cracked the code" and used that "a-HA" inspiration to finish writing the essay. Made a "B" in the course, instead of failing it.
Since then, I have taught thousands of students "how to write paragraphs and essays without the battles!" Here are some comments from actual users:
And an expert's words: "Johnnie Lewis has created some excellent instructional materials for teaching writing skills with The Five Finger Paragraph and The Five Finger Essay. When she presented a writing lesson to my class of middle school special education students, I was very impressed with the way the format of the lesson and the brightly colored materials held their attention. The overall information provided by this program is excellent for use with students who need instruction to be presented in a variety of ways. It would certainly be appropriate to use with general education students as well. The lesson plans and their accompanying materials really help students to be able to determine a useful plan for organizing their writing. I believe these materials would be an excellent supplement to an effective language arts program and would help strengthen the writing skills of almost any student." WHEN DOES IT WORK? When a student enters a classroom or a testing situation is the answer. At that entrance, he/she is faced with having to write an essay in only 25 minutes and at time has (at least) two fears:
Admittedly, there's little I can do from my chair here to help students with Fear #1. If they haven't been exposed to enough knowledge through books, newspapers, magazines, or even comic books or television before they enter the testing room, being able to organize their non-existent thoughts won't help much. But! For those students who have something to say, yet don't know how to organize their thoughts, The Five Finger Essay© most assuredly will help alleviate their fear (Fear #2) of the testing situation. 2 - 1 = 1. With half of his fears relieved before he walks into the room, half of the battle is won. Your student can focus all of her energies on developing the essay and writing it in the 25 minutes allowed instead of
In the College Board website store, they sell some really good products for test practicing, but even they only include sample essays, not specifics on how to write the essay.
